This just in: Please call your Representative in the US House of Representatives and urge them to sign the ‘Dear Colleague’ letter entitled “Global Warming Requires a Global Solution” and signed by Representative Donald Payne and others. Please do this on or before Tuesday, March 31st, at which time the letter closes for signatories.
Background: Representative Henry Waxman, Chair of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, plans to release a first draft of climate change legislation this Thursday, April 2. We are told that language may be stricken from the draft that supports adaptation financing. In other words, strong grassroots pressure is needed to make sure that the US Congress calls for financing to help poor and vulnerable communities to cope with the effects of climate change.
Representatives Donald Payne and four of his colleagues have drafted a “Dear Colleague” letter, below and attached, and plan to submit it to Chairman Waxman after close of business this Tuesday, March 31st. Our goal is to increase that number to 40 or more Representatives signed onto the letter by the end of this Tuesday.

Call your Representative’s office near you. You can find your local office’s number using this online congressional directory <http://www.congress.org/congressorg/directory/congdir.tt> , or contact his/her office in Washington DC by calling the Capitol Switchboard and asking for him/her by name, at (202)224-3121. Call during business hours. If you can’t, then call anytime and leave a message.
What to say:
“Hello, my name is _______ and I am a constituent of ___(Representative’s name)___ . I am calling to urge my Representative to sign onto the ‘Dear Colleague’ letter circulated by Donald Payne and titled ‘Global Warming Requires a Global Solution.’ I strongly believe that the US Congress must support climate change solutions that also invest financially in help for communities who are already suffering from the impact of climate change, in poor countries as well as the US. Will my Representative sign this letter?”
