Dear Representative [Doe],
As a concerned constituent in your district, I am writing to thank you for signing your name to the Principles for Global Warming Legislation letter that was delivered to Speaker Pelosi, prepared by Representatives Waxman, Inslee and Markey.
As the largest historic emitter of carbon dioxide, the U.S. has an obligation to become a global leader in the fight against climate change. The Principles for Global Warming Legislation letter not only encourages a strong environmental policy for the U.S., based on cutting carbon emissions and transitioning our country to a clean energy economy, but it aims to accomplish these goals in a socially responsible manner.
As Congress begins to discuss historic climate change legislation next year, it is imperative that the poorest communities around the world are not further marginalized by our actions. Although these communities have contributed the least to the climate change problem, they are often the first communities to feel the worst of its effects. Taking this into consideration, I urge you to continue to demonstrate leadership on the issue of international adaptation when legislation is proposed so that it minimizes the negative economic impacts and aids communities most vulnerable to harm to global warming.
Again, as a voting constituent in your district, I thank you to for taking the first step in fostering meaningful discussion around the climate change issue by signing onto the Principles of Global Warming Legislation. Furthermore, in the future, as climate change legislation approaches fruition, I ask you to recognize that we must not only establish a positive environmental policy, but the U.S. must also develop programs and allocate funding so that the poorest communities around the world can successfully adapt to climate change, as they are most severely affected.
Sincerely,
[your name]
