Philly Farm & Food Fest

Sounds right up Oxfam's alley, right? Last Sunday a group of Oxfam volunteers trekked across the Convention Center meeting local vendors and sampling delicious foods.

Some of us were very interested in the coffee...
 There was plenty to see (and eat) and it was wonderful to meet farmers and producers local to the Philadelphia region. Eating locally and sustainably is part of Oxfam's GROW campaign, and one way to address poverty worldwide starting at your own kitchen table.

It was a fun way to spend an afternoon, and we hope it will be even bigger next year! Here's a picture of our little group:
Left to right: Brian Greer [volunteer], Emily Black ['13-'14 organizer], fig tree, Randy Scholl [volunteer], Ryan Black (sheepish sibling recruit), and Sarah Magnelia ['14-'15 organizer]
 We were also able to meet a representative from the Upper Merion Farmer's Market, so we hope to be tabling there one weekend this summer. If you're close by and would like to be involved, give us a shout through email or Facebook! If not, hop over to our Upcoming Events page and see what's happening soon near you :)

David Wax Museum

Hey all! Too many concerts and too much excitement over this way....we're a little behind with posting. Time to catch up...

On September 14th OAC Philadelphia tabled at the David Wax Museum concert at World Cafe Live. While plenty of bands invite us to table at their shows (and we appreciate each and every one!), David Wax has a special connection to Oxfam. He used to be an intern in our Boston office! Very cool. He came over after the show, and while I was too distracted to get a picture, I did get his signature....on our Behind the Brands petition. Fellow band member Greg Glassman also came over and signed as well. Thanks guys!

In addition to a great show, we got almost 50 signatures - it was a very receptive crowd. Thanks also to World Cafe Live for being such a great space, and thanks again to the band for being such strong Oxfam supporters. Hope the rest of the tour goes well for them.

Look forward to posts about Arctic Monkeys and Neko Case coming shortly. And check out our Upcoming Events page to see what's coming next, if you haven't already!

Collegeville Farmer's Market

scenic Collegeville
Action Corps left the city for the suburbs this weekend and took a trip to the farmer's market in Collegeville, PA. It was a relatively quiet market, but we have a fantastic volunteer from the area who spent the morning at our table! Melissa is a student who will be starting a club at her high school this fall, and she did a wonderful job talking to market-goers and getting petitions signed.

We were talking about our Behind the Brands campaign, encouraging people to sign on and hold the ten largest food and beverage companies accountable. There were quite a few people interested, particularly in issues about GMO's in one case, and a few stuck around to talk to us longer (and take a rest in one of our chairs!).
thanks for signing!
Thanks to all the petition-signers!
 Thank you so much to the Collegeville Farmer's Market for being wonderful hosts (they lent us this tent!), and especially to Melissa for being such an enthusiastic volunteer. Like us on Facebook to see more upcoming events - more farmer's markets and at least two concerts are in the works - or send an email to philadelphia@oxfamactioncorps.org to get involved. See you soon!

Lobby visits

On Friday, May 31st, Oxfam Action Corps volunteers and a group from the UN Association of Greater Philadelphia visited the offices of Senator Casey and Senator Toomey. We were delivering petitions with over 2,000 signatures of Pennsylvanians in support of international food aid reform. If you haven't signed the petition, please add your name! It will be printed and delivered the next time we go.

Cheryl Bullock, Senior Advisor & Regional Director (2nd from right) with our delegation

 Our group included Sydney Berry (a brand new Oxfam Action Corps volunteer!) and Arushi Kohli, Maeve Flynn, and Vesko Kostic from the UN Association of Greater Philadelphia. We were very fortunate at our visit to Senator Casey's office to have the chance to sit down with Cheryl Bullock, Regional Director & Senior Advisor. We spoke with her about the details of the President's proposed changes to the international food aid budget and why they are important. One specific change frees up food aid funds so that food can be purchased locally (near the area in crisis), rather than purchasing within the United States and shipping overseas. This saves the price of shipping and up to 11 weeks of travel time, which can be crucial in a emergency. Most importantly, it means we can feed millions more people with the same amount of money.

So a huge thank-you to Cheryl for taking the time to sit down with us, and another huge thank-you to the crew from the UN Association of Greater Philadelphia. You all did a fantastic job, and we're excited to team up with you in the future!

Hello again Philly!

 It's a new year for Oxfam Action Corps, so we're tidying up from last year and starting anew. Keep an eye on this space for bigger updates - upcoming events and lots of excitement - but for now, save the date! Our next meeting with be Sunday, June 16th at 4pm in Center City (location to be announced shortly). Everyone is welcome - come check it out if you're interested in volunteering!

Food aid reform
If you want to do something RIGHT NOW, click here to sign our latest petition. This petition supports a proposed change to the international food aid budget for the 2014 fiscal year that will feed approximately 17 million more people using the same amount of money. The change allows for local purchasing, which eliminates expensive shipping costs and makes the entire process more efficient.

And if you'd like to reach out and get involved before the 16th, please do! Send me an email at philadelphia at oxfamactioncorps dot org to get in touch.

Service with the Sixers!

By: Lindsy and Cheryl

Before their show at the Tin Angel, Oxfam joined Stephen Kellogg and The Sixers as well as Calling all Crows and local volunteers for a pre-show service project in Philly!
Volunteers built compost stations on a vegetable farm with Teens 4 Good at the North Light Community Center.

The farm was on a 1/2-acre piece of land at the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education in Roxborough.  What's so special about it?  Well besides the fact that it's a local and small farm supporting the surrounding community, it also uses organic and sustainable growing practices and teaches these methods to local high school students!

This project was part of Calling All Crows' Green Summer of Service campaign.

North Light Community Center enables people of all ages and abilities to reach their full potential as productive and responsible citizens through initiatives that support and enrich children, teens, and families.

Calling All Crows partners with musicians, fans, and other organizations like Oxfam, to create change through hands-on service and activism. Founded in 2008 by musician Chad Stokes (Dispatch, State Radio) and tour manager Sybil Gallagher, Calling All Crows has raised over $250,000 to empower women in Sudan and Afghanistan and invested more than 17,000 hours of service in local communities across North America and Europe.

We had such a great time working with everyone and experiencing what maintaining a farm is like.  No one realizes that the majority of farmers across the globe are actually women.

It's important that we raise awareness about the trials and tribulations they face every day while trying to make a living and keep their family alive.  Together with these local small acts, we can raise awareness and funds to help others, like women farmers in the Sudan, flourish.

Action Corps Training & Lobbying in DC! 2012

By: Lindsy Ray

I hadn't been to Washington, D.C. in almost 10 years, so I didn't really remember what to anticipate... but it was just a short bus ride down to DC and before I knew it I was being taken away by the beautiful lights and fresh air that I felt as my cab cruised through the streets of the city towards my hotel.

Soon after that I was checking into my hotel room and meeting my new roommate and Oxfam trainee partner for the next 4 days, Taryn, who is a co-leader of the NYC Oxfam Action Corps.  Cheryl could not attend the training unfortunately due to work obligations, but I am so thankful she is by my side this year all the same!

Oxfam America took all of it's new 2012 volunteer Action Corps Leaders to DC to properly train us all, introduce Oxfam (or give a re-fresher course to those in need), and create an amazing bond between us all that will connect us for the next year and help us get through the events and challenges we all are going to be facing until we decide to pass the torch to someone else.
The details of this training are probably very extensive, especially for those reading who are new to the organization, so I don't feel that I need to share every little detail and overwhelm anyone, but I will say that the first word I was asked to give describing what I wanted to get out of my week training in DC was POWER.  Which on the last day there, lobbying day, I truly can say I achieved it.  Here's why...

Getting to know all of the co-leaders for Oxfam America was such a great opportunity to have the chance to meet people from different areas of the country and learn about what brought them to the same place as me.
We all shared past experiences and worked together to train our 5-minute canvassing hook for grabbing attention to the people around us.  We met all of the staff from the Boston office, listened to guest speakers explain their experiences with Oxfam, ate delicious and healthy foods, and also had some people share a few lovely harmonic songs with us.

The faculty from Boston gave us many tasks and exercises to broaden our perspectives and help us develop proper skills we needed to be leaders in our own cities.  For example, a last minute impromptu dinner that we all had to organize in just about 2 hours.... food, location, guests, agenda, etc!  It was a great way to see how we acted with others and were quick on our feet to plan an event.  I don't think many of us knew the secret lesson at first, but once it all came together we felt so much achievement and pride in our successful night.

I think what influenced me the most though, was the final day in DC where all of my new Action Corps Leader friends and Oxfam staff spent a full day lobbying Congress to detail innovative and cost-effective ways for fixing how we distribute Food Aid in the Farm Bill.  I never imagined that I would be talking with representatives from the state in their DC offices, it was such a stressful and exhilarating experience all at once!

It was such a scary rush, I definitely felt overwhelmed, which may have been because I had 0 of my 3 lobby visits booked when I arrived in DC... but by the last day I had booked 2 meetings and finalized the 3rd meeting in the cab ride to the city... I finally grasped that access to power.  And it suddenly became a reality.

I was given the power to influence a change in my future.  In your future.  In the world's future.  And what's amazing is that people do what I did that one day, everyday!  It really opened my eyes to the differences I could make and how much impact "We the people," actually can have.

Handing in the petiton signatures Oxfam has collected just in Philly alone, was truthfully the most powerful feeling I have ever felt yet.  Knowing that so many supporters of Oxfam (48,000+ in Philly) are behind me on this journey I have chosen to explore throughout the next year is indescribable.  I hope I can take my training and share it with those who are ready to show their support and love for people and the world around us as well.

I've learned I can't change and save the world in its entirety, but nothing says influence and inspiration is worthless.  Especially when you have a country full of such inspiring leaders helping you along the way, Oxfam  America's Action Corps!  --

"The important thing is to influence. Influence for the better. Change how people think. Use your talent to flood the eyes of the world with inspiration. Trying to control the world is impossible, but inspiration is infinite."            - Lindsy Ray, 2012

Oxfam 2012 - New co-Leaders!

It's a new season here in Philly and Oxfam has some great things in store for the 2012-2013 term!

Say hello and welcome to Oxfam Philly Action Corps' new leaders, Lindsy Ray and Cheryl Dunn.  Both have been involved with Oxfam before and are excited to jump in and get started with making a change in our future with fighting poverty and social injustice.

                                                                            ~~~~~
Cheryl got involved with Oxfam because she found out about the Make Trade Fair campaign through Coldplay in 2006. Through this, she learned about Oxfam and did a huge project on the campaign as her senior project in high school.  She also volunteered at her first show through Oxfam at the Coldplay show in NJ that year. Since, she has been a Philadelphia Oxfam Action Corps Concert Lead, an Oxfam CHANGE Leader and Facilitator, Coldplay lead volunteer for the Hershey and Philadelphia shows in 2008 and 2009.  She is looking forward to meeting new volunteers and finding new artists to follow Oxfam and their goals to end poverty.
Lindsy began working with Oxfam in 2010 when Cheryl invited her to help out at a concert.  Since then she continued to help out with tabling events and this year decided to become the Philly Oxfam Action Corps Leader.  She trained for 4 days in Washington, DC with all of the Oxfam America Action Corps Leaders and also spent a day lobbying congress about changes in the Farm Bill.  She has a lot of ideas planned for Oxfam Philly this year and hopes to see new volunteers at future meeting or tabling events as well!
